weekend project
bringing a little color to the rainy days ahead
Art making is a weekly newsletter about the practice of making art. I hope to encourage people to start their own practice to give themselves the space to explore, learn, and play…
Lately at night, once I’ve wrapped up the drawing for my 100+ day project, I’ve turned to playfully drawing dogs. They’re silly, playful doggos that are definitely not anatomically correct, but they make me laugh, and that is one of the goals.
Another other goal is to become more proficient in drawing animals in my own style—a little like my creatures, but more like known animals. There’s a balance I’m aiming for of being just realistic enough, without going down the rabbit hole of perfecting each and every line. Practicing the method of drawing without erasing is helping me become more comfortable with the process.
It’s been liberating to allow myself the space to play and get used to the messy and the fun without the need to make it right. Any way I choose to draw them all is correct. It’s my choice to decide what works. I get to take full responsibility for how they look and how I want to continue bringing them to life.
This week I finally purchased an umbrella so I can make sure to walk to work without my glasses getting covered by giant drops. I need to be able to see all the details, ha! It hit me, as I slipped off the cover, that it would be the perfect space to play with my new doggos, so I started experimenting with colors and marker thicknesses.
While I have drawn on a lot of different items over the years and more recently, a pair of vans, I haven’t drawn on something so oddly shaped with such slick material. I am up for the challenge though because stretching and experimenting is what helps us grow, learn, and dream. Working on an umbrella one day can lead to almost anywhere the next—by following my art and the ideas that arise, I feed my heart and strengthen my skills.
I’ll be diving into the project full steam over the weekend because the rains are here and I need to use it, so I gotta get it done…💛
